Mindset Fades.
Identity Lasts.

You're Right About the Market

Transactions are down. Sellers are holding out for prices from two years ago. Buyers are waiting on a rate cut that isn't coming this year.

None of that is yours to fix. None of it will change because you worked harder this week.

The Part You Can Change

Something else happened this quarter.

A buyer went quiet after nine showings and bought with someone else. A seller heard your presentation and signed with another agent. A client pushed on your fee, and you gave some of it back.

In a busy market you'd have replaced each of them by Friday. In this market, each of them costs you.

Every one of those started in a conversation you were part of. What you said. What you didn't say. How you sat in that chair when it got tense.

That's the one thing in the whole picture you can change. I write about those moments one at a time in The Room.

You Bought This Promise Before

You probably tried to change it before. A mindset program, a weekend event, a book that fired you up.

And it worked, for a while. You felt steadier for two weeks. You held your fee with a client you would have given in to a month earlier.

Then a seller pushed back on price on a Wednesday afternoon. And you were the same agent you were before you started.

That isn't a willpower problem. You wanted the change. The problem is how the change was built.

A new idea shows up once. The way you react when a client challenges you has been practiced thousands of times. When the pressure comes, the practiced reaction wins.

The idea was real. It just never got as much practice as the old habit.

What the Industry Sells

Most of what's sold to agents as mindset work is a feeling. Motivation. Confidence. Momentum.

Those feelings are real, and they're worth having. They also wear off. That's what feelings do. It's not the fault of the people who teach them, and it's not your fault for buying a program or reading a book.

So the question isn't how to get motivated again. You've done that many times. The question is what has to change so you're still steady on the Wednesday afternoon six months from now when a client pushes back.

Who You Are in the Conversation

That's identity. It's who you are in the conversation before you decided anything or said a single word.

It's why one agent hears "Your commission seems high" as an attack, and another agent hears it as a fair question. Neither of them chose that reaction. It came from who each of them already was.

Picture an agent who holds her fee without flinching. She didn't psych herself up in the car. She didn't rehearse a line on the way over. Holding her fee is just what she does now, and nobody has to remind her.

A feeling has to be pumped up again every morning. Who you are doesn't. That's what I mean when I say mindset fades and identity lasts.

There's a Number on It

Most agents never add up what this costs them. It shows up in four places.

Listings you gave a full presentation for and didn't get. Buyers who went quiet and bought with someone else. Fees you discounted when nobody made you. Clients who closed happy and never sent you anyone.

I call that the Mindset Tax. It's the cost of losing your footing under pressure. You won't find it on a settlement statement, so most agents never see it.

There's a second list. Evenings interrupted by client texts. Sundays that weren't free. Hours spent on clients you knew were wrong for you before you took them on.

Sundays or weekday evenings don't have an hourly rate. Counting them is enough.

Both Sides of the Table

Most coaching stops at the agent. Learn the systems, memorize the sales scripts, get motivated, then go win. That's half the work. It leaves you steadier and still guessing about the person across from you.

The work I do goes deeper. I use two maps.

The first is the Six Mind Shifts™. It covers your own needs, beliefs, values, roles, vision, and legacy. Those six areas decide how you show up when a client pushes. This is your work, and it comes first. You can't read what a client is protecting while you're busy protecting yourself.

The second is the Six Decision Drivers™. It covers the same six areas in your client. What they need to protect. What they believe. What matters most to them. Who they need you to be. The life they're moving toward. And the story they'll tell about the move afterward. Nobody else in this industry teaches agents to read that side.

Plenty of excellent coaches teach systems, sales closing scripts, accountability, lead generation, and now AI. They teach it well. If that's what you need, learn it from them.

I work on the person saying the words, on both sides of the table. I call it identity coaching.

Why Better Words Won't Fix It

Clients don't only listen to your words. They watch whether you're leading them or whether you need something from them. They decide that quickly without even realizing it.

A perfect sales closing script, said by an agent who needs the deal, sounds like an agent who needs the deal. Better words won't change that. Changing who's saying them will.

Take the client text you answered at 9:34 last night. You didn't answer it because the client needed you at 9:34. You answered it because of what you were afraid would happen if you didn't.

A veteran agent I know tells every new client the same thing in the first meeting. “You can reach me from seven to seven, Monday through Saturday.” One client told her afterward, "I didn't feel rejected. I felt respect."

A boundary like that doesn't turn anyone away. It tells clients how to work with you well. That's a service to them.

A Practice, Not an Event

I learned this the slow way. I listened to the same motivational tapes for forty years, and they didn't change me. What changed me was doing the work and writing it down in my own words.

So this work is a practice. You work the same six areas, on purpose, week after week, until the new response is what you do without thinking about it. It becomes automatic, with or without motivation because that's no longer necessary. It’s who you are.

I'm not promising you'll feel inspired. You've felt inspired. I am promising you'll still be doing it a year from now.

If you do the work.

Mindset fades. Identity lasts.

Every agent loses deals

Most never put a number to it.

Takes about 2 to 3 minutes to find yours.
